Cane crushing season now underway in THE Sugar City
The 2025 sugar cane crushing season is now officially underway in Mackay with Mackay Sugar starting one of its three factories today.
Farleigh Mill tipped its first bin for the season at approximately 10am Tuesday 10th June 2025. Racecourse Mill will begin crushing on Thursday 12th June with Marian Mill set to start up on Tuesday 17th June with both milling trains.
Mackay Sugar, Australia’s second-largest raw sugar producer, is kicking off the crush after a record-breaking maintenance season with $52M of capital investment into the three mills.
"Our people are our greatest asset," said Warren Waples, General Manager of Operations. "Mackay Sugar has worked around the clock on its capital and maintenance projects with our employees and contractors playing a vital role in getting the mills ready for Day 1”.
"Completing these projects on time and on budget is a testament to our integrated planning process and the expertise of our operational teams," Mr Waples continued. "By modernising our assets and continuing to reinforce a strong preventative maintenance culture, we’re not only ensuring a stable start to crushing, but also setting the stage for sustained productivity improvements throughout the season."
“We want to remind the community to be Cane Train Aware this season, as our locomotives and bins are operating around your backyard and the greater rail network”, Mr Waples said.
